Creating Film Culture: A Tribute to Dan and Toby Talbot and the “New Yorker Years”

For cinephiles, the moniker “New Yorker,” was synonymous with art cinema in America for five decades, first as a wonderfully adventurous movie theater (founded in 1960) and then as a film distributor (founded in 1965) that represented the gold standard in international cinema. As both exhibitors and film distributors, Dan and Toby Talbot made it possible for American audiences to discover filmmakers ranging from Bernardo Bertolucci and Ousmane Sembene to Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Yasujiro Ozu, Claude Lanzmann, and a host of others. With the closing down of New Yorker Films earlier this year, it seemed for many that an era had ended.

In this celebration of the “New Yorker Years,” Toby Talbot will present her new book The New Yorker Theater and Other Scenes from a Life at the Movies (Columbia University Press). Critic Molly Haskell will also be on hand to lead a conversation with Dan, Toby, and filmmaker Jonathan Demme about the Talbots’ legacy and their role in the growth of film culture in New York.

The conversation will be preceded by a reception and book signing and then followed by a screening of My Dinner With Andre.

My Dinner With Andre
Louis Malle, 1981, USA, 110m
This extraordinary, hugely entertaining verbal mano a mano was written by and features Wallace Shawn and André Gregory. It was a great hit at the 1981New York Film Festival—and of course, a New Yorker Films release.
