Min Yè... (Tell Me Who You Are)
Souleymane Cissé, 2009, Mali/France, 135m

Expertly combining serious social commentary with melodrama and humor, Malian director Souleymane Cissé’s sixth feature perceptively explores the corrosive effects of sexual double-standards in polygamous marriages among the bourgeoisie in Bamako. Min Yè… revolves around regal, indefatigable Mimi (Sokona Gakou), a 52-year-old high-ranking bureaucrat married to filmmaker Issa (Assane Kouyate), who has another, younger wife. When Issa becomes suspicious of Mimi’s relationship with fish monger Abba (Alou Sissoko), who has two wives of his own, she explodes at his socially sanctioned hypocrisy, serving him with divorce papers—a move that Issa counters by accusing her of adultery. Cissé’s warring spouses, full of foibles but richly and compassionately drawn, valiantly struggle toward marital détente, exposing some uncomfortable truths along the way.
