Around a Small Mountain / 36 vues du Pic Saint-Loup
Jacques Rivette, 2009, France, 85m
At 81, Jacques Rivette, the French New Wave veteran and the master of the sprawling epic, delivers, of all things, a model of compression. A chance encounter on a mountain road compels Vittorio (Sergio Castellitto) to tag along with Kate (Jane Birkin) as she returns to the circus community she left years ago. As in so many Rivette films, hidden connections and histories lie in wait, the characters operate as if under a spell, and the stage—or, in this case, the single ring of a forlorn, sparsely attended circus—is a transformative space, “the most dangerous place on earth,” as Vittorio puts it, “but also where everything is possible.” Elegant, melancholic, and deceptive in its serene simplicity, this is a concise summary of career-long themes by one of cinema’s all-time greats, and a bracing and lovely work in its own right.
